Reconnecting With the Elderly Around the Holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time to reconnect with our aging parents or grandparents.  If it’s not possible to visit in person, reconnect using social media, video-chat, etc. It is important to have friendships and meaningful relationships with other people.  If you can make it home for the holidays, reconnect with your elders through these activities:

  • Plan to visit family and friends.
  • Relive memories through photo albums together.  Ask questions to elicit stories and relive memories.
  • Create an heirloom that can be passed down to your kids.
  • Interview them about their life. Ask questions about their childhood.
  • Ask about family traditions and recipes.
  • Utilize email, holiday cards, social media and video calls to keep in touch with family members and friends near and far.
  • Get involved in social activities through local and faith-based organizations.
  • Eat a balanced diet and go for a nice walk.
  • Explore new hobbies.
